 our history

The Mauritian Bible Institute grew out of a part-time Christian Leadership Development Program started in 1992 by the Evangelical Churches on the Island. Because of the tremendous interest shown by Christians from other denominations it became important to open the doors to all who would want to come and learn God's Word. A number of other classes were started in the following years.

It was decided to bring all these classes under the auspices of a single Bible School. In January 1998 the Mauritian Bible Institute was born. The MBI now offers a 1, 2 and 3 year diploma course at its study centre in Curepipe as well as certificate courses at its various extension schools. A total of 150 students attended the MBI in its first year of existence (1998).

our courses

The Mauritian Bible Institute offers a variety of Bible based courses to suit the different needs of the Mauritian Church. We have "extension schools" as well as "in-house" classes. We have a number of satellite schools around the Island so that anyone wanting to prepare for the Christian ministry is able to do so.

We offer a variety of courses enabling any Christian to study at a pace which suits them.

1,2 & 3 Year Diploma of Theology

Our diploma courses require students to attend full-time classes Monday to Friday. The work load is fairly heavy and students should be free to commit themselves to 1,2 or 3 years of study. Each year is modular and can be built upon at any time. The MBI is at present working on accreditation for its diploma with other schools internationally.

Bible training for Church Leadership

This BTCL course not only forms the basis for our first year full-time program, but is being taught over two years to a number of classes. Materials have been prepared by Dr. Dennis Mock and cover the essential subjects needed to prepare someone for effective church ministry.

Students will need commit themselves to 2 ½ hours of lecture a week for 2 years. The BTCL certificate enables a student to join the 2nd year diploma course (depending on their diligence during the BTCL classes).

MBI Extension Schools

At present there are four extension schools; at Rose-Hill, Flacq and two in Curepipe. We will soon be starting others at Port Louis and Rose-Belle. A module normally lasts 12 weeks with a one hour lecture per week, assignments and an exam.

We teach subjects such as; Hermeneutics, John's Gospel, Comparative Religions, Acts, Hebrews, Church History, Basic Bible Doctrines, etc.. A credit is awarded for each module completed. 10 module credits will earn the student a "Certificate of Christian Ministry".

our facilities

We are proud of our good facilities that make studying a pleasure at the MBI.

We have a growing library of nearly 3000 valuable Christian books; both reference and general interest. We add about 100 books per month and have the goal of 12000 within the next 5 years. Students can study knowing that they have the necessary resources.

We have computers available for students to use should they need to type assignments. We intend to provide internet access for students needing to "surf the web" for research material.

The main "Study Centre" in Curepipe houses the library and administration block as well as being used for a number of classes.

our students

Our students reflect the diversity of the Mauritian population. Over 8 different denominations are represented. Our youngest student is 18 and the oldest is over 60. A number of our students are pastors or church leaders. A number feel called to full time work. Other want to grow in the knowledge of God's Word.

Mauritius is a joyful mix of languages and the MBI reflects this by offering its courses in English, Creole or French depending on the lecturer or class.

our influence

The MBI has already had some major impact on the Mauritian Church. Unity between denominations is encouraged as students mix with other groups. Churches are even beginning to swop preachers on occasion.

A healthy interest in outreach is growing and 2 groups of our students have gone on short term missions trips. One group went to India and another group to South Africa. A number of other trips are already in the planning stages. Folk feel more equipped to go and evangelize.

our cost

Our fees are far cheaper than any other equivalent course overseas - and you don't have to pay any airfares! We do have a limited amount of scholarships available for those students that do not have the necessary finances. See the attached list of fees for your year of study.
